Breckenridge Christmas: Events, Lights and Things to Do
A Breckenridge Christmas starts with about 250,000 LED holiday lights switched on in Blue River Plaza on Saturday, December 5 at 5:00pm, and the sun sets at about 4:41pm all month, so the big events happen at dusk. This page lays out a dated December calendar, the Lighting of Breckenridge and the Race of the Santas, Ullr Fest, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, things to do in the snow, Frisco and Denver nearby, the weather and the drive up I-70, where to stay, and the tours worth booking. Christmas and New Year week is also the hardest week of the year to get a seat for dog sledding in Breckenridge, so book 2-3 months ahead.

Parking on Lighting Day
GoBreck expects a very busy weekend and asks visitors from Denver to carpool or use shuttles. The most convenient paid parking is the South Gondola structure at 150 Watson Avenue. The free option is the Free Skier Shuttle Lot on McCain Road, open 6:00am-11:00pm with no overnight parking, served by the Breck Free Ride Green and Red routes.
The Airport Road Lot is permanently closed. After the lights come on, the Breckenridge Ghostly Tales tour walks the same downtown blocks after dark for $30.

What Ullr Is and Skating with Ullr
Ullr is the Norse god of snow, and the festival asks him for a powder-filled season. This is the 63rd year. You can also skate with Ullr at the Stephen C. West Ice Arena, adults $13 and youth or seniors $10, with free skate rental included.
GoBreck posts the skate time with the full schedule. December highs run in the mid-30s F with lows in the teens to single digits, so dress for standing around in the dark.
Rockstar Energy Open
The Rockstar Energy Open brings a snowboard contest, music and a fan village to Breckenridge Ski Resort from December 18-20. Entry is free, with VIP upgrades sold, and a concert plays in Blue River Plaza. It overlaps the Friday and Saturday of Ullr Fest, so the town stays full from Thursday, December 17 through the weekend.
GoBreck expects a busy stretch: for those days, use the Free Skier Shuttle Lot on McCain Road (6:00am-11:00pm) and the free buses rather than hunting for a space downtown.

Dinner Reservations
GoBreck counts more than 100 bars and restaurants in town, and most stay open over the holidays, but many do not offer special holiday menus. Reservations are highly recommended, and most restaurants will not seat incomplete parties, so confirm your full headcount. Walk-ins should go early and expect a wait.
Curbside pick-up and to-go are widely available if planned ahead. Beyond food, GoBreck counts more than 200 stores if you need a last gift.

Things to Do in Breckenridge at Christmas
Between the events, the snow itself is the programme. The longer list is in things to do in Breckenridge in winter.

Skiing in Christmas Week
The resort says it covers about 2,900 skiable acres, 187 trails and five peaks. Its opening was postponed from November 6 with no new date announced, per Unofficial Networks, and early-season terrain depends on natural snow and snowmaking, so check what is open before you plan a first day. Best of Breckenridge advises booking rentals before you arrive in the holidays, so reserve a ski rental package before you arrive and skip the queue on the first morning.
Dog Sledding, Sleigh Rides and Snowmobiles
Prices for the guided snow rides around town, from this site's activity pages, with the rule that decides who can go. Christmas and New Year week is the tightest booking window for sled seats, so book those first.
| Activity | Price | Limits | Page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sled tours in the valley | $195-$295 per adult plus a $6-$7 Forest Service permit | Minimum age 5, 275-lb limit | Breckenridge dog sledding |
| Sleigh ride | $55-$75 adult, dinner rides $125-$150 | No age minimum | Sleigh ride Breckenridge |
| Snowmobile | $258 solo machine, $351 for two, plus $11 permit and $15 damage waiver | 15 to drive, 18 to carry a passenger | Snowmobiling Breckenridge |
Sledding, Skating and Nordic Trails
Carter Park, four blocks east of Main Street, is the town's free sledding hill with a Sled Shed to borrow and leave sleds, though GoBreck posted that it was closed for the 2026 season, so check GoBreck before you carry a sled up. The nearest tubing hill is the Frisco Adventure Park about 15 minutes north, which also has a free traditional sledding hill from 9:00am to dusk, projected to open on November 26, weather dependent. For skating, the Stephen C. West Ice Arena has indoor and outdoor rinks with rentals.
Two Nordic centres share more than 50 km of groomed trails: Gold Run Nordic Center with 12+ groomed miles, and Breckenridge Nordic Center near Peak 8 with 18+ miles of ski trails and 12+ miles of snowshoe trails. To get out on snowshoes with a guide, book the snowshoe tour. The BreckConnect gondola from town to Peak 8 is free.
Nights: Stars and Stories
The star tour runs 90 minutes with large telescopes on the Imperial Deck at Beaver Run Resort, 620 Village Road, with no hike and wheelchair access. Cloud cancels it, so book it early in your stay. It is a new listing.
The Strange but True walking tour meets at 100 N. Main Street and caps at 12 people, with a minimum age of 8. The fat bike, beer and spirits tour spends two and a half hours on fat tyres between a brewery and a distillery on packed snow, for adults.

Christmas Near Breckenridge: Frisco, Georgetown and Denver
Three towns within reach add their own holiday programming, and the national forest sells tree permits.
Frisco Wassail Days
Frisco, about 15 minutes north, runs Wassail Days from Saturday November 28 to Sunday December 6. More than 50 Frisco businesses serve their own wassail, a hot spiced cider. Fill a 12 Sips of Wassail Card and redeem it at the Frisco/Copper Information Center for a commemorative mug while supplies last, and bring a reusable mug.
On Saturday December 5, storytime with Santa's reindeer happens at the Frisco Historic Park Schoolhouse Museum, with the reindeer on site until 1:00pm.
Holiday Trains in Georgetown
The Georgetown Loop Railroad in Georgetown, on I-70 toward Denver, runs two holiday trains, Santa's Rocky Mountain Adventure and Santa's Lighted Forest. This season's dates and fares are published on georgetownlooprr.com. Hotel Alpenrock notes that Breckenridge has no Christmas train of its own and names Georgetown and the Leadville, Colorado & Southern Railroad Holiday Express as the nearest.
Georgetown sits on the I-70 drive, so it fits the arrival or departure day.

Christmas Lights in Denver
The Denver holiday lights walk covers 1.5 miles past Union Station, the Mile High Christmas Tree, the Dairy Block, Larimer Square and the Christkindl Market, up to 20 people for $24. It fits the arrival or departure night, and the tour description says Denver has been called The Christmas City for over 100 years. The walk is not a loop and starts two blocks from Union Station, where the Snowstang coach to Breckenridge leaves on winter weekends for $12.50, so it pairs with a night in Denver before the drive up.
Food is not included, so budget for the market stalls.

Cutting Your Own Christmas Tree
The White River National Forest Christmas tree permit is $10, with a limit of 5 per person and sales final. Buy it on Recreation.gov, from local vendors or at the Dillon Ranger District office. Cut 6 inches or less from the ground, never top a large tree, and attach the permit to the trunk before leaving the forest.
Winter travel season starts November 23, when many Forest roads close to wheeled vehicles.
Breckenridge Christmas Ale
The beer behind the Breckenridge Christmas Ale searches is Breckenridge Brewery's Christmas Ale, which the brewery has brewed since 1993. Its original brewpub, open since February 1990, sits at 600 S Main St, a short walk from the lights in Blue River Plaza.
